22-24 February: World Oceans Summit

WFC Director Alexandra Wandel will be attending the World Oceans Summit in Singapore from 22 to 24 February 2012 to discuss best policies on oceans and coasts with the world's top ocean experts. Chaired by The Economist Editor-in-chief John Micklethwait, the summit will examine how the increasing activity in and around the oceans can be managed sustainably and what this means for business and other key stakeholders. More than 200 global leaders from various sectors and disciplines, including government, business, international organisations, NGOs, think-tanks and academia will participate in this outcome-driven dialogue. 2012 is a critical year for ocean and coastal policy, and the World Future Council’s Future Policy Award 2012 will celebrate the world’s best policies for oceans and coasts. In October, governments from 193 countries will convene in Hyderabad, India to agree on policy measures on coastal and marine biodiversity at the 11th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP-11).

1 March: Feed-in Tariff Workshop
The WFC will sponsor a briefing for California farm groups on the benefits of a robust Feed-in Tariff state policy in Sacramento. Randy Hayes, WFC-Director US Office, will give the opening remarks and set the context for a powerful response to the climate dilemma. For more information on the workshop download the flyer here.

2 March: Municipalities moving ahead in climate protection
The WFC is co-hosting an event with the Heinrich Böll Foundation on 'Muncipalities Moving Ahead: Rio+20' in Stuttgart, Germany. Stefan Schurig, WFC Director Climate, Energy and Cities, will lead the series with the opening event 'The Regenerative City', which will discuss and further develop ideas and strategies for local sustainability. Which projects, programs and management approaches have proven to be successful, and which are less productive? What does that mean for the future of local sustainability policies? Should the concept of the regenerative city replace that of sustainability? How can German and European municipalities not only be sustainable but also regenerative? The anticipation of the upcoming UN Rio+20 Earth Summit in June offers motivation to grapple with such questions. For more information see the event flyer here (in German).

5 March: German-African Economic Forum North Rhine-Westfalia 2012
In the second German-African Economic Forum of North Rhine-Westfalia in Dortmund, organised by the 'Auslandsgesellschaft NRW (Foreign Subsidiaries of North Rhine-Westfalia), WFC Director Africa Liaison Office Ansgar Kiene will moderate an event on renewable energy and green technology. Africa will be the market of the future: over one billion people live on this continent, the geographic proximity of which lends itself to be an important trading partner of Europe. Nonetheless, German businesses are still highly underrepresented in this market. The second German-African Economic Forum North Rhine-Westfalia will focus on the challenges of expanding in the African market and possible solutions. Further information on this event can be found here (in German).

13-18 March: The Next Five Years: Acting and Growing Together

The strategy meeting will be based on WFC Founder Jakob von Uexkull's current discussion paper 'How to Save Our World' and on the objective of mobilising the Councillors' networks and other key players in order to have an impact. Policy priorities in each working group will also be discussed.
